Chega says that the urban hygiene problem in Lisbon is due to poor management

“What we want is to replace those people, to put capable individuals in charge of urban hygiene because this is mainly a management problem, not a problem of model. The decentralization model makes sense; what doesn’t make sense is having these unprepared protagonists and political cronies who are placed in these roles and have no idea what they are doing,” stated Chega’s top candidate, Bruno Mascarenhas.

During a campaign event in the Marvila district, accompanied by the party leader André Ventura, the candidate assured that he would remain in opposition if he does not win the race for Lisbon City Hall.

“We either win or we will be the opposition, this is clear,” he emphasized.

After the Chega president left the campaign action, Bruno Mascarenhas continued discussing urban hygiene, highlighting the importance of having more human resources and suggesting the acquisition of vehicles with greater collection capacity.

“It’s important to have more human resources, but it’s also essential to have collection vehicles, vehicles with six-ton collection capacity instead of the two tons some of the purchased vehicles have,” he stressed.

The candidate also criticized the “Por Ti, Lisboa” coalition’s candidate, Carlos Moedas, accusing him of not knowing the city and realizing only “after four years that there’s an issue with bags around recycling bins.”

“Only at the end of the mandate did he recall that there’s a serious problem with urban hygiene because, if you listened to him a few weeks ago, Engineer Moedas was saying everything was fine and that the city was cleaner,” he continued.

Bruno Mascarenhas also expressed the need to review contracts to understand “why certain investments were made,” considering they “do not guarantee efficient waste collection.”

The candidate highlighted the significance of Marvila, a district of “special importance,” where Chega won in the legislative elections and because it’s a “neglected” district.

“Here we have a large public housing stock where we want to give people the opportunity who have been paying rent for years, almost having paid these houses, to become owners,” he stated.

In the local elections on Sunday, candidates for the presidency of Lisbon City Hall include Alexandra Leitão (PS/Livre/BE/PAN), Carlos Moedas (PSD/CDS-PP/IL), João Ferreira (CDU-PCP/PEV), Bruno Mascarenhas (Chega), Ossanda Líber (Nova Direita), José Almeida (Volt), Adelaide Ferreira (ADN), Tomaz Ponce Dentinho (PPM/PTP), and Luís Mendes (RIR).

The municipal executive comprises seven elected members from the “Novos Tempos” coalition (PSD/CDS-PP/MPT/PPM/Aliança), seven from the “Mais Lisboa” coalition (PS/Livre), two from CDU, and one from BE.
