During a street campaign event in Setúbal, André Ventura announced that the party plans to reintroduce proposals that defined Chega’s stance in the previous legislative session.
One key proposal is aimed at repeat serious offenders. “Those who commit a serious crime and then reoffend will not be eligible for suspended sentences or options other than imprisonment. They must serve a minimum of five years in prison,” Ventura stated, further proposing that multiple reoffenders should face a minimum sentence of ten years in prison.
The Chega leader emphasized that this strategy is intended to remove criminals from society and ensure that the Portuguese justice system functions effectively, without the standard suspended sentences and amnesties that are often given, not due to magistrates’ fault but rather because the law does not prevent it.
The second major proposal targets immigrants, as Chega aims for foreign nationals who commit serious crimes to be immediately deported to their country of origin after serving their prison sentence.
“These are two proposals we will revisit. Should we have the ability to influence or lead the next government, we will demand that these become fundamental measures of the new governance framework,” said André Ventura.
Chega held a rally today in Setúbal’s center, before the official campaign period for the May 18 legislative elections. André Ventura, alongside party members and supporters, walked through several city streets, greeting and taking photos with some of the locals who approached him.
Among those present was Lina Lopes, a former PSD deputy elected from Lisbon, who left her party and is running for Setúbal City Council with Chega’s support.
The delegation displayed Chega and Portuguese flags, and several youths wore shirts representing the party’s youth wing.
