Chega: “We must know where the mafia that profits” from the fires is

Chega deputy Pedro Frazão accused the PSD of “continuing to celebrate” while fires still ravage the country.

“The PSD was celebrating in the Algarve while the country was burning, and now the fires haven’t stopped, but the PSD continues to celebrate,” the deputy stated in an interview with CNN Portugal on Monday night.

Pedro Frazão was referring to the social democrats’ Summer University taking place this week.

“Five ministers are scheduled for this JSD (Social Democratic Youth) event, along with the current President of the Republic, who is also from the PSD, and the PSD-backed presidential candidate [Luís Marques Mendes],” said the deputy, criticizing the presence of these representatives at a party event instead of being on the ground with those affected by the fires.

CPI do Chega? PSD considera

The PSD parliamentary leader today described Chega’s proposal for an inquiry into fires since 2017 as “inappropriate and useless” but expressed support for the PS’s idea of a new independent technical commission.

Regarding the Parliamentary Inquiry Commission (CPI) that Chega intends to advance compulsorily, forcing its realization without majority approval, Pedro Frazão claimed that the 2017 CPI conclusions are insufficient—if they were adequate, the country wouldn’t be facing the same issues.

“How is it that more than 3 billion euros have been spent on firefighting and prevention from 2017 until this year, yet we’re still suffering in these areas?” asked the deputy.

“We need to find out where this mafia profiting from the 3 billion euros behind the fires is,” he added, stating that “it is the duty of the deputies to seek the truth, and citizens have the right to be informed with that truth.”

Chega admits forcing the establishment of an inquiry commission

Chega admitted today that they are prepared to force the establishment of a parliamentary inquiry commission on fire prevention and combat if they cannot secure an agreement with PS and PSD, as they want it to start as soon as possible.
