The Chega party’s proposal to amend the State Budget for 2026 was approved in the specialized phase, receiving votes against from the PSD and CDS, abstentions from the IL, PCP, and Livre, and votes in favor from the remaining parties.
The bill stipulates that the government must, in 2026, increase the budget allocation for the Constitutional Court, the Entity for Accounts and Political Financing, and the Transparency Entity by a total of 1,600,000 euros.
In a parliamentary hearing, after the period for submitting amendments to the budget had closed, Judge Mariana Gomes Canotilho estimated that 1.6 million euros would be required for the Constitutional Court (TC) to have the necessary resources to fulfill its sovereign functions in 2026.
As the opportunity to submit new proposals for the budgetary discussion had closed, Chega proposed altering the content of one of its initiatives to include this funding.
The PAN also presented an initiative along the same lines, with the proposal from the party represented by sole deputy Inês de Sousa Real expected to be voted on later this afternoon.
This morning, the issue was discussed, with the PSD considering it “extremely serious” that the TC had “chosen to enter the political-partisan debate arena” and pointing out that the body did not execute its entire budget in 2024.
