Chiado Museum exhibits video art in ‘loop’ by four artists until September

Beginning in July, the 10th edition of the art event showcased the work “List of burned books in Germany in 1933” by Spanish artist Miguel García Membrado, open to the public until Sunday.

Created in 2018, the video “proposes a more extensive reading of the archive, where interaction with the artwork is essential to reveal its content,” originating from the idea that “only through the burning of the list can the titles of the books burned in Germany in 1933 be read,” as noted in the synopsis from the statement released by MNAC-MC.

Loops.Expanded is an international artistic and curatorial network dedicated to researching and disseminating the concept and form of the ‘Loop’—a cycle without beginning or end—and primarily aims to showcase video art and moving image pieces, along with promoting symposiums, masterclasses, and colloquiums.

Until September 7, the museum will also host exhibitions of works by Mexican artist Antonio Arango, “Ouroboros” (2018), from August 12 to 17, British artist Natalia Sardi, “Scores for Moterh & Daughter” (2024), from August 19 to 24, and Spanish artist Eugenio Ampudia, “La Verdade es una Excusa” (2007), on display from August 28 to September 7.

This year’s edition opened with the immersive installation “Untitled for C, Rising Series” by Rui Soares Costa and André Gonçalves, exploring the repetition and movement of tides, addressing contemporary themes like the relationship with the aquatic environment of the Tagus.

Loops originated in Lisbon through the initiative of the artistic structure Duplacena, leading to a five-edition national video competition at the Museu do Chiado from 2015 to 2019.

It extended its exhibition partnership through Loops.Extended—to cities like Madrid, Pisa, and Amsterdam—supported by the Directorate-General for the Arts via DuplaCena, sponsorship from Millenium BCP, and the Lisbon City Council through MNAC-MC.
