A truck veered off course early Tuesday, April 22, on the National Road 111 (EN111) in Montemor-o-Velho, resulting in an unusual accident reminiscent of the film ‘Chicken Run’.
The heavy vehicle, transporting approximately 5,000 chickens, mounted the roundabout and crashed into a barrier, eventually overturning. This incident was detailed by the publication Diário de Coimbra.
Hundreds of chickens then managed to escape the vehicle—owned by Lusifrota, a company under the Lusiaves Group—and attempted to make their way along the EN111.
Images shared on social media by the newspaper capture this extraordinary scene.
The report indicates that the road was actually closed to traffic in the Coimbra-Figueira da Foz direction, to facilitate the collection of the birds.
No individuals were injured in the incident; however, some chickens did not survive. The National Republican Guard (GNR) attended the scene.
