
A child involved in a serious railway accident near Luzianes-Gare, in the municipality of Odemira, was stabilized at the scene by medical staff, according to the Sub-Regional Command for Emergency and Civil Protection of the Alentejo Coast. At 7:44 p.m., a helicopter from the National Institute of Medical Emergency took off to transport the child to a hospital.
Rail traffic on this section of the South Line was restored at 7:15 p.m., the source noted.
Infrastructure Portugal (IP) confirmed that train services between Santa Clara-Sabóia and Luzianes resumed around 7:00 p.m.
The railway accident alert was raised at 5:29 p.m., according to the Sub-Regional Command for Emergency and Civil Protection of the Alentejo Coast.
The victim, identified as a 12-year-old boy in critical condition, and his father were near a bridge about a kilometer beyond the level crossing when the incident occurred.
An IP spokesperson mentioned that train traffic had been halted since 5:10 p.m. because of an “incident” at kilometer 246, without specifying the nature of the event as a railway accident.
The response included 12 personnel, supported by four vehicles, encompassing resources from firefighters, the National Republican Guard (GNR), and the National Institute of Medical Emergency (INEM), alongside a helicopter based in the Algarve.
