The Chinese Ministry of Commerce has urged the United States to take significant measures to amend past mistakes and to completely cancel the practice of reciprocal tariffs, advocating for a return to mutual respect. This statement was made by a spokesperson in a communication reported by French news agency AFP.
Amidst an ongoing trade war with China that has stirred global financial markets, the United States has shifted its stance. On Friday, it exempted smartphones, computers, and other Chinese electronic products from the monumental new tariffs previously imposed by President Donald Trump.
Today, in a position also reported by the AFP, the Chinese Ministry of Commerce referred to the American decision as a “small step,” while noting that it is assessing its impact.
According to a memorandum issued by the U.S. Customs Service late Friday, these exemptions apply especially to electronic products imported from China to the U.S., which had earlier raised general import tariffs on this Asian market by up to 145%.
For instance, the American tech giant Apple manufactures its iPhones in China.
In retaliation to the U.S. decision, Beijing increased its tariffs on all American products to 125%, a measure that came into effect on Saturday.
