The Christmas lights are now illuminating the main streets, avenues, and squares of Lisbon. The inauguration ceremony took place in the late afternoon of Saturday, November 22, attracting thousands who flocked to downtown Lisbon, either by car or public transportation, to witness the event.
You can watch the moment when the lights of the iconic Christmas tree at Terreiro do Paço were turned on, accompanied by a fireworks display, in the video above.
The Christmas tree at Terreiro do Paço stands 30 meters tall, and this year, the illuminations stretch over a path equivalent to more than three laps around the city – exceeding 182 km of lights.
The decorations are spread across 46 locations, including squares, streets, and avenues in the city, with about a thousand lighting structures comprising 5,900 decorative pieces.
About 80% Energy Savings
According to the authorities, the LED technology project “ensures about 80% energy savings, combining beauty and sustainability.”
The 2025 lighting reinforces Lisbon’s environmental commitment by using recyclable and biodegradable materials, with many structures repurposed from previous years and a focus on solar energy utilization, as noted in a statement issued by the Lisbon City Council weeks ago.
According to the authorities, the iconic Rua Augusta will be “adorned with light trees and clouds that will glide over pedestrians, and Luís de Camões Square will come alive with a monumental installation inspired by a festive palace, a meeting point for photos and unforgettable moments.”
On Rua Garrett, “golden light clouds will float above the street, and on Rua do Ouro, golden clouds and shimmering stars promise to transform this artery into an enchanted sky,” while Rua do Carmo will feature “a sequence of light arches creating a luminous tunnel where light and music will blend.”
Thousands Flocked to See the Lights… Causing Chaos
As every year, thousands of residents and tourists did not want to miss the inauguration of the Christmas lights in the capital. While some opted to drive to the downtown area, others chose public transportation. In either case, the scene was one of great confusion.
