Cinemas lose 40% of spectators and revenue in August compared to 2024.

In August, Portuguese cinemas experienced a sharp decline, with 962,600 viewers compared to 1.6 million the same month last year.

Revenue in August totaled 6.24 million euros, marking a 39.9% drop from last August’s 10.4 million euros.

Year-to-date figures show a decrease compared to 2024, with a 6.1% decline in audience numbers and a 2.9% fall in revenue.

In July, Portuguese cinema venues already noted a 35.7% drop in audience numbers compared to the same month in 2024, with over 31% loss in box office revenue.

Nonetheless, during the first seven months of the year, values were still positive compared to 2024, with a 2.8% increase in audience numbers and a 6.7% increase in revenue.

American productions topped the list of the most-watched films in August, with Pierre Perifel’s “The Bad Guys 2” attracting the most viewers: 137,000 since its release on July 31.

Dean Fleischer Camp’s “Lilo & Stitch” leads as the most-watched film of the year with 660,000 viewers since its debut on May 22.

Walter Salles’ “I Am Still Here” remains in third place with over 384,000 viewers since its January 16 release.

Leonel Vieira’s “The Courtyard of Saudade,” premiered on August 14, is now the most-watched Portuguese film of the year with nearly 55,000 viewers.

Laura Carreira’s “On Falling” falls to second place, with 13,000 viewers since its premiere in March.
