The CIP announced that a letter urges Portugal to advocate for a coordinated position among southern European Union countries at the MED9 summit—an alliance that includes nine member states from the Mediterranean region, the eurozone, and the Schengen Area—taking place this Monday in Slovenia.
The document, endorsed by business confederations from the Mediterranean member states, calls for a collective effort to bolster the competitiveness, cohesion, and resilience of the European economy.
The business organizations urge their respective governments to pursue a more ambitious economic agenda, focusing on the completion of the single market, regulatory simplification, and the reduction of energy costs—elements deemed crucial by business representatives for safeguarding Europe’s industrial base.
The confederations from the MED9 countries—Portugal, Spain, France, Italy, Greece, Malta, Cyprus, Slovenia, and Croatia—advocate for the creation of a common southern European strategy that enables the bloc to have greater influence in European negotiations regarding competitiveness and financing, said the CIP.
The organizations also call for the development of more energy interconnections in the Mediterranean region.
