A proposal was ratified during the executive’s biweekly meeting to install a video surveillance system in the city, particularly focusing on the historical area, high-crime areas, major communication routes, and isolated bridges frequently used by pedestrians.

In statements to Lusa, Mayor Sérgio Costa indicated that the protocol to be established with the PSP marks the onset of the project.

“We need to assess the needs, draft the project, handle its licensing with the National Data Protection Commission, and obtain validation from the Ministry of Internal Administration,” Costa stated.

According to the mayor, only after these steps will efforts to “find financing methods and commence the process of supplying and installing these devices” begin.

Sérgio Costa noted that no specific areas in the city have been earmarked for camera installation, acknowledging that “everyone can consider where the system is most necessary.”

However, the goal is to develop “the necessary model” for Guarda through on-the-ground work conducted “case-by-case” by City Hall employees and the PSP.

“The process will take its time, but today marks the starting point for installing video surveillance in Guarda,” he assured.

The mayor aims for the system to be operational by 2026 to reduce vandalism and crime.

Socialist councilor António Monteirinho, who filled in for Adelaide Campos at today’s executive meeting, expressed regret that the proposal lacked a “preliminary study” and did not include the costs involved in the upcoming installation of the surveillance cameras.

Sérgio Costa responded, “We are proceeding with the process as Matosinhos, Leiria, and Castelo Branco councils have. The starting point is this protocol of financing and cooperation with the PSP. Next, we must evaluate the costs and identify the sources of funding.”
