City of Venice reinstates tourist access tax to the historic center

This year, the municipality of Venice has announced that the entry fee for visiting the city will be set at 5 euros for those who make a reservation up to four days before their arrival. The fee will double to 10 euros for reservations made three days or less prior to the visit.

“The measure aims to establish a new management system for tourist flows and to discourage daily tourism in Venice during certain periods, given the city’s delicacy and uniqueness,” stated the Mayor of Venice, Luigi Brugnaro.

The fee will be applicable only to the historic city center and not to the smaller surrounding islands. Visitors passing through areas such as Piazzale Roma, Tronchetto, or the Maritime Station without entering the historic center will be exempted.

Visitors will be required to register on a dedicated platform to obtain a QR access code, which must be presented upon request.

The ticket confirms the payment of the contribution or exemption status, and visitors must carry it at all times.

Initiated in 2022 and expanded the following year, the entry fee targets discouraging day tourism and encouraging travel during less busy periods. In 2024, the fee was enforced on 29 high-traffic days from April to July.

As part of broader efforts to reduce tourism’s impact on the city, Venice has also limited tourist group sizes to 25 people and banned the use of loudspeakers.

Tourist flows in Venice have increased significantly since 2022, with the city hosting around 5 million tourists in 2024, a number comparable to pre-pandemic levels.
