The exercise, named ‘A Terra Treme’ (www.aterratreme.pt), is set to take place at 11:05 AM today, organized annually by the National Authority for Emergency and Civil Protection (ANEPC) in collaboration with various public and private entities, aiming to prepare the population on how to act in the event of an earthquake.
ANEPC seeks to inform the public about what to “do before, during, and after an earthquake, specifically understanding preventive measures and adopting self-protection behaviors.”
According to Civil Protection, the exercise involves “the execution of three simple gestures that can make a difference for those who practice them during an earthquake.”
ANEPC notes that the activity unfolds over one minute, during which participants, individually or collectively (families, schools, businesses, public, private, or associative institutions), are invited to perform the three self-protection gestures: drop, cover, and hold on.
This year marks the 13th edition of the exercise, always held on November 5th, coinciding with World Tsunami Awareness Day, and four days after the anniversary of the great earthquake of 1755, commemorating 270 years this year.
Across the country, the Regional and Sub-regional Emergency and Civil Protection Commands of ANEPC, in partnership with educational communities, municipal civil protection services, fire departments, and other civil protection agents, will engage in awareness-raising activities concerning seismic risks.
The main event of this 13th edition will once again be held at a school, specifically at Agrupamento de Escolas Professor Reynaldo dos Santos, in Vila Franca de Xira, where the president of ANEPC, José Manuel Moura, will be present.
