Civil Protection warns of preventive measures in burned areas

The National Authority for Emergency and Civil Protection (ANEPC) has issued a public warning regarding forecasts by the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) for occasionally heavy rainfall, especially along the northern and central coasts. Rainfall may be more intense in the highlands of these northern and central regions.

The initial rains may lead to urban flooding, flooding of rivers, or landslides due to water infiltration. This phenomenon can be exacerbated by the removal of vegetation following rural fires or by soil artificialization, ANEPC points out.

The contamination of potable water sources with debris from rural fires is also a concern for the authority, along with the movement of loose objects onto roads or detachment of mobile or poorly secured structures due to strong winds, which may lead to accidents involving vehicles or pedestrians in public areas.

The potential impact of these effects can be minimized, primarily through adopting appropriate behaviors. Preventive measures include clearing drainage systems and removing debris.

Defensive driving, reducing speed, and being cautious of water sheets on roads should also be practiced. The public should be advised not to enter flooded areas to prevent being swept into potholes or open sewers and to stay informed with meteorological information and guidance from authorities.

According to the Integrated Rural Fire Management System (SGIFR), the year 2025, as of August 31, is the third worst year on record in terms of burned area, with 17% of large fires starting at night.
