The operations officer of ANEPC, José Costa, reported that as of 9:00 PM on Thursday, the agency recorded “2,106 incidents across the mainland” due to adverse weather conditions influenced by storm Cláudia, with intense and persistent rains, strong winds, and maritime agitation.
The Lisbon and Tagus Valley region recorded the highest number of incidents, with 1,196, followed by the Central region with 477, according to the operations officer.
In the northern region, there were 130 incidents, in the Algarve 203, and in Alentejo 100, he added.
The Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) forecasts continuous rain across the mainland, along with maritime agitation and winds, particularly in Faro, Lisbon, Beja, and Setúbal, for today. Consequently, Civil Protection maintains its level 2 operational status until next Monday.
As of 9:00 PM on Thursday, 6,725 personnel supported by 2,504 ground resources were involved in relief operations, noted the Civil Protection official.
In terms of casualties, ANEPC reported two fatalities in Fernão Ferro, Seixal district of Setúbal, due to flooding in a residence, and one minor injury following a tree fall in Serpa, Beja district.
As a result of the severe weather, three people were left homeless in the municipality of Abrantes (Santarém district) and one in Pombal (Leiria district). There were also multiple damages primarily due to wind affecting homes and vehicles.
The depression Cláudia has been impacting mainland Portugal and the Madeira archipelago with strong rain, wind, and maritime disturbance, according to IPMA.
IPMA issued a red warning, the highest level, for heavy and persistent rain in the districts of Santarém, Setúbal (until 10:00 AM), and Faro (until 3:00 PM).
