Claudia: The highest wind gust on Thursday was 127 km/h. Where?

The storm Claudia has been affecting mainland Portugal and Madeira for two days, bringing heavy rain, strong winds, and rough seas. The severe weather has caused significant damage and resulted in the loss of two lives in Fernão Ferro, in the district of Setúbal, which was under a red alert for several hours yesterday.

Today, assessments of the damage begin alongside calculations concerning the highest wind gust recorded during Claudia’s passage through Portugal.

The Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) reported that the highest wind gust on Thursday was recorded at Penhas Douradas in Serra da Estrela, reaching 127.1 km/h.

The second highest gust was 124.2 km/h at Cabo da Roca in Sintra.

Meanwhile, in Madeira, a gust of 116.3 km/h was recorded at Areeiro and another at 112.3 km/h.

Yesterday witnessed various extreme wind events across the country.

More than 450 incidents and two deaths in the Setúbal Peninsula

Two fatalities and more than 450 reported incidents since 2:00 PM on Wednesday is the provisional toll of the bad weather in the region, according to the Sub-Regional Command of Emergency and Civil Protection of the Setúbal Peninsula.

Besides the winds, the rain also resulted in damage, including flooded homes, landslides on roads, and submerged cars.

By 9 PM on Thursday, mainland Portugal recorded 2,106 incidents due to persistent heavy rain and strong winds, resulting in two deaths, one minor injury, and four people displaced, according to the National Authority for Emergency and Civil Protection (ANEPC).

The Lisbon and Tagus Valley region experienced the most incidents (1,196 occurrences), followed by the Central region (477). In the Northern region, 130 occurrences were noted, Algarve had 203, and Alentejo 100.

Today, the severe weather continues but with slightly reduced intensity. Setúbal and Faro remain on orange alert, while the rest of the country is under a yellow warning.
