Climáximo criticizes election results and organizes “popular sit-down”

The collective, Climáximo, has expressed deep concerns over the recent electoral results and called for a “popular sit-in” scheduled for June 1. “These results confirm what we already knew: entrusting our lives to this parliament is suicide,” they stated in a press release. The election night led to a victory for the AD — PSD/CDS coalition, with Chega and PS obtaining an equal number of deputies, excluding overseas voters.

Climáximo argues that the outcome signals a clear warning to all who recognize the need to avert the impending climate and social collapse, which, according to the group, is inherent in the current system. They had previously analyzed party platforms against the Disarmament and Peace Plan, asserting, “entrusting our lives to the ballot box is suicide,” criticizing the absence of electoral programs aligned with scientific safety limits.

The movement condemned the lack of commitment to achieving carbon neutrality and ending fossil fuel dependency by 2030. “No party committed to carbon neutrality or halting the fossil economy by 2030. All consent to constructing a new airport, preferring to maintain the current absurd status quo, rather than transforming everything while we still can, for a just life for all and a habitable planet,” stated a spokesperson for Climáximo.

In their communication, Climáximo insists that the election results should dispel any hope that the system will address the climate and social crises. “We must build people’s power ourselves. Only the people will save the people,” they declared.

The group detailed that on June 1, the meeting point for the “popular sit-in” will be at 3:00 PM at Alameda D. Afonso Henriques. This initiative aims to “halt the climate crisis” and campaign for “free public transport for all.”
