Clinical director of Santa Maria dismissed after controversy. A successor has already been appointed.

Rui Tato Marinho, the clinical director of Hospital Santa Maria in Lisbon, has been dismissed following recent revelations concerning additional surgeries.

The decision was made last week by the chairman of the board, Carlos Martins, after the results of audits on these surgeries became known.

The dismissal was accepted this Wednesday by the Health Minister, Ana Paula Martins.

The minister has also approved a successor, who will be Ana Isabel Lopes, the current director of the Pediatrics service. Ana Isabel Lopes is already known to the public, having been called to the Parliamentary Inquiry Commission concerning the Luso-Brazilian twins who received the drug Zolgensma at the same hospital.

It was Ana Isabel Lopes who responded to a call from the State Secretary for Health, then led by António Lacerda Sales. The call, made by Lacerda Sales’ personal secretary, requested “a neuropediatric consultation and a clinical evaluation for two children (twins) diagnosed with a specific pathology.”

The Controversy

Earlier this week, resignations occurred in this department following the preliminary findings of an internal report requested by the chairman of the board regarding additional surgeries at Santa Maria.

Confronted with the findings, which confirmed irregularities in the Dermatology service, the head of the Dermatology department, Paulo Filipe, resigned.

One contentious case at the hospital involves a dermatologist who recorded performing several surgeries in her name while these were actually conducted by internal doctors, as she was attending a conference in Italy.

The report from TVI highlighted that the doctor earned nearly 113,000 euros in seven days of additional surgical production (Saturdays).
