CNE denies Ergue-te’s request for an opinion on the demonstration at Martim Moniz.

The National Election Commission has not yet received any request for an opinion on demonstrations scheduled for tomorrow, an official source confirmed.

Further clarification regarding the potential prohibition or route alteration of a political party’s planned demonstration is expected later.

Rui Fonseca e Castro, the president of the party Ergue-te, asserted in a social media video today that the party intends to demonstrate on April 25 in Lisbon’s Martim Moniz, despite a negative opinion from the PSP, which the Lisbon City Council has agreed to validate.

“Tomorrow, starting at 3 p.m., we will all gather at Martim Moniz for a celebration of the Portuguese family and culture, and most importantly, for a civil and fraternal demonstration,” stated the former judge in a video released at 2:00 p.m. on Ergue-te’s public channels, which has been shared by far-right groups like 1143.

In the message, the leader of Ergue-te, formerly the National Renewal Party (PNR), argued that as the event is organized by a political party as part of the campaign for the legislative elections on May 18, “it cannot be prohibited.”

Rui Fonseca e Castro added that in this context, the party had already requested an opinion from the National Election Commission, which allowed the event to proceed as configured.

Today, the PSP issued a negative opinion on the gathering at Martim Moniz, organized by Ergue-te and Habeas Corpus, a negationist movement previously led by the ex-judge, with support from 1143, led by Mário Machado.

The police force justified its decision, communicated to the Lisbon City Council, citing concurrent “demonstrations/gatherings for the same time and geographical area” with “distinct and antagonistic objectives and ideological positions” and the need to “ensure public order and tranquility.”

An official source from the municipality, led by Carlos Moedas, stated that “as is always the case in such situations,” the City Council “will follow the recommendation and assessment of the PSP, which found that the necessary safety conditions were not met and that the aforementioned initiatives ‘endanger public order and tranquility.'”
