Coffee fan? Price increase gives no respite and has already risen 28% just this year.

The cost of a 250-gram package of ground roasted coffee has surged to 4.86 euros. Over the past week, the price of this product rose by 87 cents (a 22% increase) after two consecutive weeks below four euros, as revealed by DECO PROTeste.

“At the beginning of this year, ground roasted coffee was priced at 3.81 euros. Since then, it has increased by 1.05 euros (a 28% rise). A year ago, the same package cost 1.59 euros less (a 49% decline), and on January 5, 2022, it was 1.86 euros cheaper (a 62% decrease),” stated the consumer protection organization.

Food Basket Prices Also Rising

DECO PROTeste’s data, which monitors prices weekly, indicates that the food basket is on an “upward trajectory”:

“In the past week, the basket of 63 essential food items monitored by DECO PROTeste since 2022 experienced a price increase of 74 cents (a 0.31% rise), reaching 240.12 euros,” according to the released note.

Compared to the beginning of the year, “this basket of essential goods rose by 3.95 euros (an increase of 1.67%). A year ago, it cost 12.01 euros less (a 5.26% decrease). On January 5, 2022, when DECO PROTeste began monitoring the cost of the food basket, the price was 187.70 euros, 52.42 euros less (a 27.93% decrease).”

Biggest Price Increases

In the last week, from July 2 to July 9, besides ground roasted coffee, products with the highest percentage increase in price were mackerel (24%), curly lettuce (20%), and fish fingers (18%).

“Comparing this week’s prices with those from the first week of 2025, on the other hand, the highest percentage price increase was observed in products like ground roasted coffee (28%), eggs (24%), oranges (20%), and Gala apples (19%),” as noted.

Since DECO PROTeste began this analysis on January 5, 2022, “the highest percentage increases were seen in beef for boiling (97%), eggs (75%), and tomato pulp (70%).”

It should be noted that since January 2022, DECO PROTeste “has been monitoring the evolution of essential food prices, analyzing the total basket cost every Wednesday based on prices collected the previous day from major supermarkets with online stores.”

“The average price per product is calculated across all online stores in the simulator where it is available. Then, by adding the average price of all products, the cost of the basket for a specific day is obtained,” the consumer protection organization notes.
