The predecessor of Carlos Moedas at the Lisbon City Council accuses the current mayor of repeatedly lying “about matters of great seriousness,” referring to Moedas’s interview with SIC Notícias the previous day.
“He lied, fundamentally, to save himself. It’s an interview where Carlos Moedas of 2025 seeks to save himself from Carlos Moedas of 2021. It’s an interview where Carlos Moedas tries to save the opportunistic Moedas of 2021,” he stated in an interview with Rádio Renascença on Monday, September 8.
Fernando Medina also stated that the mayor “does not want to apply the criteria he defined to himself.”
The socialist recalled that Moedas was “the quickest of all” to publicly demand his resignation in the Russiagate case – when the Lisbon municipality sent Russian authorities the names, addresses, and contacts of three Russian activists who organized a protest in front of the Russian embassy in Lisbon for the release of Russian opposition leader Alexey Navalny, who has since passed away.
The Russiagate case dates back to 2021 when the Lisbon local government disclosed personal data of anti-Putin activists who protested in Lisbon for the release of Alexei Navalny, a Russian opponent who has since died this year.

Besides expressing indignation, Medina said he felt “repugnance” after Moedas invoked the name of former minister Jorge Coelho and claimed that he had information indicating structural issues with the Entre-os-Rios bridge before the tragedy and did nothing.
“What Carlos Moedas says is absolutely false,” guaranteed the socialist. “There was a trial and at no point was it said that the minister had information that could have prevented the disaster,” he recalled.
Medina reminded that Moedas considered that “a leader is responsible even for all the technical errors that occur within his institution.”
“He set that bar, and today, confronted with the bar he himself established in 2021, Carlos Moedas flees,” accused the former president of the Lisbon municipality.
“Carlos Moedas of 2025 is already dismissed by Carlos Moedas of 2021,” concluded Medina.
The socialist confessed he chose to remain silent for four years, even after hearing lies about his term and seeing management errors at the council, but he cannot stay silent after Moedas’s “lies” in the interview about the Descarrilamento do Elevador da Glória.

The Elevador da Glória had already derailed in 2018, but without victims. At the time, as recalled by Le Figaro, “nobody said anything,” however, witnesses had already warned about the possibility of it happening again. On social media, many point fingers at the lack of investment.
