As temperatures drop in Portugal following recent warm spells and rainfall, a cold front is set to take hold, according to the Instituto Português do Mar e da Atmosfera (IPMA). The weather forecast for Thursday predicts a “slight decrease in temperature” along with a “significant nighttime cooling,” affecting large parts of mainland Portugal.
The IPMA shared on social media that skies will be “mostly clear,” with the far north experiencing “generally very cloudy” conditions, and a temporary increase in cloudiness in the interior North and Centre during the afternoon.
There is also a possibility of “light showers in the extreme northern mountain ranges, which may fall as snow.” Additionally, there is a chance of “frost formation, particularly in the North and Centre.”
The agency also highlighted that a “significant nighttime cooling” and a “slight decrease in temperature” are expected.
In the Lisbon and Porto metropolitan areas, similar conditions are expected, with Porto experiencing not only nighttime cooling but also a “slight decrease in maximum temperature.”
Winds are forecast to be “light to moderate from the north,” potentially becoming “strong along the western coastal strip and highlands, especially until mid-morning and from late afternoon.”
The IPMA’s website shows that Faro will register the highest maximum temperature at 18°C, with a low of 9°C, while the district of Guarda will have the lowest maximum at 6°C and a minimum of 0°C.
After the Storm, the Cold…
Following the aftermath of Storm Cláudia, which resulted in three fatalities and substantial material damage in Portugal, the rainfall subsided. However, inclement weather will now give way to cold conditions.
Since Tuesday, November 18, the mainland has been affected by a northern airflow and cold air mass, “which will cause a significant decrease in air temperature.”
The IPMA noted that this shift in weather patterns will bring temperatures below the seasonal average. The cold snap will be accompanied by reduced cloudiness and rainfall.
Until Friday, November 21, minimum temperatures may decrease by 2 to 4°C each day, reaching levels between 0 and -4°C in the north and central interior regions, and between 4 and 7°C elsewhere.

Following Storm Cláudia’s impact on Portugal, the adverse weather is now being replaced by cold conditions. By Friday, minimum temperatures could drop by 2 to 4°C daily, reaching between 0 and -4°C in the interior North and Centre, with rain expected to return afterward.
