The renovation work at the property commenced at the end of July with an intervention on the roof.
The Friends of the Coliseum Association anticipates that this stage of the renovation will be completed “by the end of August 2026,” with all necessary rehabilitation works expected to conclude “during the year of 2027,” according to their response.
The public tender, valued at 2.792 million euros, was launched at the end of March and is divided into two lots: the first concerning conservation and restoration work and the second focusing on alterations.
The work plan was developed under the “premise” that the cultural venue’s programming would not be disrupted.
Approximately 2.5 million euros of the required amount for the undertaking is funded by the Regional Program Norte2030.
“The operation ‘Coliseu Porto — Rehabilitation and Requalification’ (…) co-financed by the Regional Program NORTE 2030 with nearly 2.5 million euros includes conservation and restoration work, improvements in safety, accessibility, and environmental sustainability, as well as the creation of a tourist visitation space and a panoramic view terrace over the city,” reads the online page of the regional program.
Upon completion of the interventions, it is estimated that “the Coliseum can see an increase of about 40% in the number of visitors, reinforcing its role as a meeting place between heritage and innovation, culture and community.”
The Coliseu do Porto has been classified as a monument of public interest since 2012.
