Rui Sampaio, the president of the Góis Municipal Council, stated that firefighting resources were actively combating the fire in the region to manage and control the flames.
“The fire has not yet reached the mountain, and that is what we are trying to control,” he said.
This morning, at 9:34 AM, the mayor noted that resources were already on the scene attempting, “with interventions at various points, to contain the rise of the fire and the connection at the top [of the mountain], which, if it happens, could indeed provoke complicated situations.”
“We are making an effort with resources, not only from the Góis firefighters, but also from other corporations here, Afocelca [a forest protection company], and private machinery […], to see if we can contain it here, because if it passes to the other side, we will have a very serious problem,” relayed Rui Sampaio at the time.
By 2:30 PM, the official noted a “bit of wind” at the location, but mentioned that “everything possible” was being done to curb the flames.
“The goal is indeed to succeed. So much so that aerial resources have been attacking it here. I asked again for the aerial resources to come, we’ll see,” said the council president, who was on-site.
This fire, which began on Thursday in the Lousã municipality, crossed over to the Góis municipality on Friday, prompting the activation of the Municipal Emergency and Civil Protection Plan.
At 3:00 PM, according to the website of the National Authority for Emergency and Civil Protection, the Lousã mountain fire was being fought by 451 operatives, supported by 136 vehicles and three aerial means.
