Commission allows Member States to increase payments to farmers

The European Commission has announced that if EU member states utilize this authorization, farmers could receive up to 70% of direct payments in advance starting October 16, compared to the current 50% allowance.

Similarly, advance payments for area or animal-based interventions under rural development could increase to 85%, instead of the usual 75%.

The Commission acknowledges that EU farmers continue to face liquidity issues due to an exceptional combination of adverse events, including extreme weather conditions affecting yields in recent years, along with uncertainty from trade tensions.

To address these challenges, and in line with one of the key objectives of the Common Agricultural Policy — ensuring an economic safety net for EU farmers — the statement indicates that a large majority of member states have requested this authorization.
