Compare Martínez to Pedro Nuno? “Only when he wins a European championship”

The comedian Ricardo Araújo Pereira has drawn a comparison between Roberto Martínez, the national team coach, and Pedro Nuno Santos, the Secretary-General of the PS (Socialist Party). He questioned the former Minister of Housing and PS deputy Marina Gonçalves on SIC’s program “Isto é Gozar Com Quem Trabalha” about whether the socialist would step down from the party leadership after losing the elections for a second time against Luís Montenegro.

In response, the former minister stated that Martínez could only be compared to the Secretary-General of the PS once the Spaniard wins a European football championship.

“In fact, we can only compare Roberto Martínez to Pedro Nuno Santos when he wins a European championship because Pedro Nuno won the European elections in May. We truly compare when he manages to win a European championship, which we all hope will happen,” defended Marina Gonçalves.

Following this response, Ricardo Araújo Pereira described the European elections as the “League Cup of political life,” considering them less important than the Legislative elections.

“What a lack of faith in the European Union and our State’s role in the EU. For us, it is an election as important as the Legislative ones. It is in the EU that we discuss central issues for our country as well,” responded the former Minister of Housing.

Regarding the controversy over Chega’s posters, which compare Luís Montenegro to José Sócrates, with whom Pedro Nuno has also been compared by the opposition, Marina Gonçalves merely stated that the socialist needs to “work and focus on his program.”

“When it was his turn, he didn’t like it. Now with others, it might be useful. We prefer to focus on work. Pedro Nuno Santos will show his work on the streets,” she concluded.

Early elections were announced by the President of the Republic on March 13, two days after the Parliament rejected a motion of confidence in the Government, which led to the resignation of the PSD/CDS Government.
