Compensations from the Elevador da Glória will “take time”: What are the amounts?

The CEO of Fidelidade, the insurer for Carris, stated over the weekend that the compensation process for the victims of the Glória elevator accident will take time, as the involved amounts have yet to be defined. He assured that “no one will be left behind.”

This indicates that no final figures have been set and they may vary on a case-by-case basis. At the time of the accident, it was reported that 70,000 euros had been established as the minimum amount payable to a family in case of death.

However, this is not a fixed amount, as it only serves as a baseline and several factors will determine the compensation value.

“These processes tend to be a bit lengthy. We have already paid expenses for all these victims, such as hospital treatment costs and travel for family members,” said Rogério Campos Henriques in an interview with Antena 1 and Jornal de Negócios, released this weekend.

According to the executive, this type of process “typically is lengthy because the compensation values in the case of deaths have yet to be clearly defined.”

Factors to Consider in Determining Value

Rogério Campos Henriques highlighted that several variables need to be considered to reach this value, such as the victim’s age, family situation, incurred moral damages, or even identifying heirs, making it a lengthy process.

“It is a process that will take time, but we assure that, regardless of how long it takes, no one will be left behind,” added the executive. He did not specify the amount provisioned by the insurer for this case, mentioning that “it amounts to several million euros.”

The derailment of the Glória elevator, managed by the municipal company Carris, occurred on September 3, resulting in 16 deaths and dozens injured, including Portuguese and foreigners of various nationalities.

Fidelidade Established Commission to Expedite Compensation

In mid-September, Fidelidade set up an independent technical commission to oversee and ensure that the compensation processes for the victims of the Glória elevator accident, which caused 16 deaths, proceed quickly and transparently.

In a statement, Fidelidade, as the insurer of the transport company Carris, announced that the “creation of this commission aims to ensure that the compensation processes proceed transparently, swiftly, fairly, and humanely.”

The Independent Technical Commission for Monitoring Compensation to the Victims of the Glória Elevator Accident will conduct a “specialized assessment of personal damages resulting from this accident and the validation of the respective indemnification quantification to be carried out by Fidelidade.”

The insurer emphasizes that the accident “demands from Fidelidade not only an effective response to the day-to-day issues but also the creation of an external and independent solution to ensure the evaluation of bodily damages and the review of compensation proposals submitted by the insurer, in terms that reinforce the confidence of the victims and their families, both within and outside Portugal, and that can serve as a reference in handling a tragedy of this magnitude.”
