Compensations to crew members? TAP awaits court decisions “calmly”

In the context of this process, the company recorded an accounting provision of approximately 40 million euros.

When asked about the higher estimates suggested by the National Civil Aviation Flight Personnel Union (SNPVAC), ranging from 200 to 300 million euros, the executive emphasized that he is unfamiliar with these figures.

“I do not recognize those numbers, I don’t know where they come from, and we do not comment on legal proceedings,” stated Luís Rodrigues during a meeting with journalists in Lisbon, highlighting that the year is not yet over and that the company is awaiting judicial decisions.

Regarding a possible increase in the provision, he simply said that it is necessary to “calmly await that things reach a good outcome.”

The context of the process dates back to a collective labor agreement valid between 2006 and 2023, which established salary differences between fixed-term and permanent workers.

In June, the Supreme Administrative Court declared this rule invalid, ruling that fixed-term crew members should be classified under the “CAB I” category and receive corresponding wages.

In October, SNPVAC announced that the sentence of the case concerning reimbursements became final, paving the way for TAP to potentially be obliged to pay between 200 to 300 million euros in compensation.

Part of the affected crew was dismissed during the pandemic, with some departures considered irregular, while TAP reinstated 925 workers between March 2020 and March 2021, paying 1.74 million euros in compensation.
