Fernando Alexandre participated in the closing session of the 10th edition of the INESC TEC Autumn Forum, a unit dedicated to “Being Human in the Age of Artificial Intelligence — Identity, Ethics, and Society in a Technological World,” marking the research unit’s 40th anniversary.
Speaking to journalists after the event, the Minister of Education, Science, and Innovation assured that “it is not due to a lack of resources” that “some schools do not have computers.”
When asked about the cause of this shortfall, the minister stated that he will inquire about what happened “because the directors were questioned about the need to purchase computers,” he insisted.
“If they are lacking, the need was not communicated,” stated Fernando Alexandre.
He continued: “I am not saying that it is impossible to improve some dimensions, not so much in student use, but more in the administrative computers and libraries, which are still very old, and we would like to replace them quickly. What I am saying is that it has not been due to a lack of funding. There is sometimes a problem with equipment management.”
Fernando Alexandre also confirmed that “there is not a case of a school that requested funding to purchase computers that did not receive funds from the ministry.”
