Conde Ferreira Hospital begins home support for mental patients

The executive president of a hospital under the Santa Casa da Misericórdia do Porto, Jorge Dias, has outlined the operations of the Mental Health Home Support Team (EADSM), which is part of the National Network of Integrated Continuous Care in Mental Health (RNCCI-SM).

Supported by the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR), this initiative focuses on individual and proximate care with the aim to enhance individual functionality, reduce hospital admissions, support informal caregivers, and strengthen community integration, the vice-provider of Santa Casa da Misericórdia do Porto explained.

This program is “intended for individuals with severe mental illness, who are clinically stable and require a program tailored to their level of psychosocial disability,” he added.

Hospital administrator Ângelo Duarte stated that the project emerged from a program agreement with the Ministries of Health and Social Security, aimed at supporting eight patients daily.

The administrator disclosed that the multidisciplinary team comprises psychologists, social workers, mental health nurses, occupational therapists, and medical action assistants.

Regarding the planned investment, Ângelo Duarte revealed that “it is not finalized but is estimated between 100,000 and 150,000 euros, with the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR) contributing 92,000 euros.”

The daily service fee is 40.44 euros, to be shared among the Ministry of Health, Social Security, and the patients, “if they have an income.”
