Confederation of Tourism sends condolences to the families of the victims

Reação da CTP sobre o acidente no elevador da Glória

“At this moment of profound grief, we express our deepest condolences to the families and friends of the victims, standing in solidarity with all those affected by this terrible event,” stated the CTP in a communication sent to newsrooms.

“It was with immense sorrow and consternation that the CTP learned of the tragic accident that occurred with the Glória elevator in Lisbon, which, unfortunately, resulted in fatalities and several injured people, some critically,” the confederation mentions.

The CTP expresses its support to the families during this period of mourning and shows appreciation for all entities involved in the rescue and support of the victims.

The accident caused 17 deaths and injured 21 people. Among the 17 fatalities, 15 were confirmed at the scene of the accident, while two died at hospitals where they had been transported.

Lisbon’s Municipal Civil Protection Service director, Margarida Castro Martins, announced today that of the 38 people affected by the accident, 15 died on Wednesday while 23 were transported or went on their own to hospitals, two of whom died overnight.

The injured, comprising 12 women and seven men, are from at least 10 different nationalities: four Portuguese, two Spanish, one Korean, one Cape Verdean, one Canadian, one Italian, one French, one Swiss, and one Moroccan. Four injured individuals’ nationalities remain unidentified.

The government declared a national day of mourning for today.

The Glória elevator, operated by Carris, connects Restauradores to the São Pedro de Alcântara Garden in Bairro Alto along a route of about 265 meters, and is highly sought after by tourists.
