“Firstly, regarding what falls under my responsibility, and our current interpretation of the role of culture—which we often discuss—content is essential. It’s not just about the narrative; I mean content in a ‘lato sensu’ [broad sense], what we can produce to attract and, above all, differentiate the value proposition that Portugal has,” stated Pedro Machado.
The Secretary of State for Tourism, Commerce, and Services spoke during a debate in Lisbon, organized by the Association of Entertainment, Festivals and Events Promoters (APEFE).
“What sets Portugal apart in such a global and competitive world? Its uniqueness. Where is its uniqueness found? In its differentiation. Where is its differentiation? Heritage, culture, history, etc. By definition, yes, that is the ‘leitmotiv’ [main reason],” the official responded when asked about the connection between Culture and Tourism.
In this context, responding to an audience inquiry about financial support from Turismo de Portugal for cultural events in low-density areas, Pedro Machado expressed support for certain types of aid.
In this relationship between Tourism and Culture—”being coherent and consequential”—funding should be allocated “to what should be funded,” he stated.
“Tourism must indeed have this positive impact, given that it generates substantial revenue, and this revenue comes precisely because we have inherited strategic assets, such as heritage, among others, which we need to contribute to, not only for preservation and qualification but especially for enjoyment. We want people to enjoy what we have. There are local issues, municipalities, etc. Anyway, that is a good discussion at this stage, but I would stay only on these two points,” he added.
In closing, Pedro Machado reminded, “It is neither the intention nor should it be for the State to replace the private sector.”
“By definition, we have this clearly stated in our vision for the sector,” he emphasized.
