“Our vision includes acquiring modern equipment to reduce handling time at the terminal, which involves containerized cargo with enhanced security. With these innovations, we anticipate transporting over 300,000 metric tons annually,” stated Jan De Vries, CEO of Cornelder, during a meeting with a group of managers from a logistics multinational in Beira, Sofala province.
The executive noted that the investment plans include acquiring 30 forklifts and expanding warehouses over an area of 3,000 square meters, allowing the port to double its cargo handling capacity. This facility is used by neighboring countries for importing and exporting goods.
Jan De Vries further mentioned that Cornelder de Moçambique “has various innovative projects in the pipeline to establish the Port of Beira as an excellent logistics platform,” not only for Sofala province but also for the Southern African Development Community (SADC).
The Mozambican Ministry of Transport and Logistics announced in February that studies are underway to solve the truck congestion issues accessing the city port, one of the country’s most important.
In October 2023, the Mozambican government announced plans to invest $290 million (278 million euros) for the expansion and modernization of the Port of Beira, a key port for Mozambique and the surrounding region.
In the same year, Mozambican ports handled over 63,000 tons of cargo, a 12.3% increase compared to 2022, with nearly half of the activity coming from Maputo, according to budget execution data accessed by Lusa at the time.
