Prime Minister António Costa said today that there was a misunderstanding by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky about the Atlantic Alliance’s willingness to one day welcome the country as a member state.
“There was certainly a moment of misunderstanding since the declaration, obviously, results from an invitation that exists, and the reaffirmation of all that Ukraine can be a member as soon as possible, naturally presupposes an invitation,” said António Costa, speaking to journalists at the end of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) summit in Vilnius, Lithuania.
However, the prime minister stressed that Ukraine’s membership of Nato will only be possible “when the conditions are met”.
