At the presentation of the study “Portugal and the Rights of Persons with Disabilities: Perceptions and Challenges”, held this morning in Parliament, journalists questioned the two candidates about the health of Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa. Following his surgery on Monday, he had a good night and may be discharged on Wednesday.
The candidate supported by the IL wished for the “continuation of a full recovery” and advised the President of the Republic “to stay active because early mobility is what most ensures a full recovery”.
“It will be a pleasure to see the President return to full capacity,” said Cotrim Figueiredo.
Similarly, Jorge Pinto wished for a “speedy recovery and that it was just a scare”, considering the updates on the head of state’s health to be good news.
“It’s with great pleasure that I hear these updates and I hope, of course, that President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa can quickly return to active life and fully perform his duties,” stated the candidate supported by Livre.
Jorge Pinto hopes that “very soon” Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa “can return 100% to political life and certainly also complete his term with full energy and health”.
The President of the Republic, who underwent surgery on Monday for an incarcerated hernia, had a good night and may be discharged on Wednesday if all goes well, according to the president of São João Hospital in Porto, as announced this morning in a press briefing.
“It is expected that he will stay here today, and we believe he might be discharged shortly. He will remain here today. If everything continues as it is and all is well, we believe he could be discharged tomorrow [Wednesday]. The President is perfectly calm,” she added.
President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa was admitted on Monday night to São João Hospital in Porto after feeling unwell due to indigestion, the Presidency of the Republic indicated.
On its official website, the Presidency of the Republic explained that the head of state felt unwell “when returning from Amarante, from the funeral of Engineer António Mota” in Amarante.
In a statement to the press at around 10:00 PM on Monday, Maria João Baptista explained that the decision to undergo surgery was also due to Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa “having already undergone a previous surgery for a hernia similar to this current condition”.
Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, 76, presided on Monday morning, in Praça dos Restauradores in Lisbon, over the commemorations honoring the Heroes of the Restoration and of the War of the Acclamation, which celebrates the restoration of national independence in 1640, and then proceeded to the funeral ceremonies of former Mota-Engil president, António Mota.
