A 64-year-old man and a 60-year-old woman were arrested on November 18 for olive theft in the municipality of Campo Maior, district of Portalegre, as reported by the National Republican Guard (GNR).
In a statement released this Friday, the authority indicated that the arrests took place “during a patrol operation conducted in a rural area occupied by olive groves.”
During the operation, the officers caught the suspects in the act while harvesting olives without the owner’s permission.
The couple was arrested, and the GNR seized various materials, including tools used in the theft, and 143 kilograms of olives, which were returned to the rightful owner.
The detainees were formally charged, and the case was reported to the Judicial Court of Elvas.
In the notice, the GNR recalled that Operation Campo Seguro is ongoing, “aiming to intensify awareness, patrolling, and inspections in agricultural and forestry areas nationwide to curb product and agricultural machinery theft, human trafficking crimes in labor contexts, and to prevent accidents involving agricultural or forestry vehicles and machinery.”
