Couple arrested in Lisbon with cocaine in their suitcases after arriving from Brazil

Two individuals, a man and a woman aged 24 and 23, were apprehended on July 16 at Humberto Delgado Airport in Lisbon, on charges related to drug trafficking, it was announced on Friday.

The Lisbon Metropolitan Command of the PSP indicated that the arrest was part of a border control operation. The suspects, “apparently a couple,” had arrived from Brazil and were intercepted to verify their conditions for lawful stay within the Schengen Area.

Given the circumstances, the couple was directed to a secondary inspection where a more thorough assessment of their entry conditions into Europe was conducted.

During this process, the pair reportedly admitted to carrying a potentially illicit substance.

Following a summary search, officers from the Airport Security and Border Control Division of the PSP discovered several packages in the luggage of the couple, which contained a suspicious substance believed to be drugs.

The substance was seized for analysis, revealing it to be cocaine with a total weight of 8,973.17 grams – 2,193.53 grams with the man and 6,779.64 grams with the woman. The amount corresponded to 44,865.85 individual doses.

The detainees were brought before a judicial authority for preliminary interrogation, where preventive detention was ordered.

PJ Arrests Four, Seizes 100 Kilograms of Cocaine at Porto Airport

Additionally, on the same day, the Polícia Judiciária (PJ) announced the arrest of four individuals at Porto Airport in a drug trafficking operation that led to the seizure of 100 kilograms of cocaine in suitcases from Brazil.

In a statement, the PJ reported that the arrests took place on Wednesday, the same day as the couple’s arrest in Lisbon, with support from the Airport Division of the PSP and the Tax and Customs Authority.

The suspects, aged between 27 and 60, reside in Porto and Matosinhos. PJ inspectors intercepted them as they were about to leave the port area with four suitcases containing cocaine.

The PJ noted that “the drugs, exhibiting a high degree of purity, arrived on a flight from São Paulo, Brazil, and were collected by the suspects from the baggage claim.”

The authorities suspect the drugs were intended to supply illegal markets in major social neighborhoods of Porto.
