A 21-year-old courier has been detained by the Public Security Police (PSP) on suspicion of stealing 16 iPhones, a MacBook, and an iPad by removing them from packages before delivery in the Olivais parish of Lisbon.
In a statement sent to the authorities on Monday, the PSP explained that the young man, suspected of theft, “worked for a distribution company” and “before delivering the packages in his care, he would open them and remove part of the contents.”
After the theft, the courier “delivered the sealed package to the recipient, but with various technological items missing.”
Following reports, PSP officers “carried out immediate and tireless efforts to locate the suspect.”
The young man was eventually intercepted by the PSP and was found with six iPhones “still packaged and labeled that should have been delivered to the recipient.”
Subsequently, during the “ongoing investigations,” a total of 16 iPhones, a MacBook, and an iPad were recovered, valued at approximately 10,000 euros. The items had been stolen and resold.
Three other men have been named as defendants on suspicion of handling stolen goods.
The detainee was brought before the competent judicial authority for the first judicial interrogation and is subject to a weekly reporting requirement as a measure of restraint.
