The Judicial Court of the District of Madeira today admitted all 13 candidacies presented for the September 24 Regional Elections, rejecting the request that challenged the legitimacy of Chega, a judicial source said.
“The judge in charge of the electoral process ruled that all the irregularities detected had been remedied and admitted the 13 lists submitted to the regional elections,” the district president told Lusa.
According to Filipe Câmara, “the application filed against Chega’s candidacy was rejected outright, due to the applicant’s lack of legitimacy, the absence of any communication from the Constitutional Court about this party and the absence of any procedural irregularity,” he said.
A member of Chega filed a complaint with the National Electoral Commission (CNE) following the Constitutional Court ruling that annulled the party’s convention, considering that it called into question the regularity of the list of candidates in Madeira, approved by the national leadership.
The court did not consider the arguments presented and validated the candidacy of this party, headed by Miguel Castro, the party’s regional leader.
For the next elections, the candidacies of 11 parties and two coalitions were presented at the Funchal Court: Somos Madeira (PSD/CDS-PP), Partido Socialista (PS), Juntos pelo Povo (JPP), CDU (PCP/PEV), Partido da Terra (MPT), Bloco de Esquerda (BE), Partido Trabalhista Português (PTP), Pessoas-Animais-Natureza (PAN), Livre, Alternativa Democrática Nacional (ADN), Reagir, Incluir, Reciclar (RIR), Iniciativa Liberal (IL) and Chega.
In the regional elections of September 22, 2019, the PSD lost its absolute majority in the Regional Legislative Assembly of Madeira, which it had held since 1976, electing 21 deputies, and formed a coalition regional government with the CDS-PP (three deputies).
In that election, the PS elected 19 deputies, the JPP three and the CDU one.
