Cases of infection with the SARS-CoV-2 virus have increased in recent days in Portugal. According to data from the Directorate-General for Health (DGS), more than 200 cases of Covid-19 were recorded last Monday and Tuesday.
The data updated by the DGS indicates that 208 cases were registered on Monday, a figure that rose to 228 the following day. In the first 26 days of the same month, an average of 54 cases per day was recorded.
The last time more than 200 cases of Covid-19 were recorded in Portugal was on January 3, when 318 infections were recorded in one day. Before that, it was December 27 and 28, 2013, with 239 and 241 infections, respectively. All three dates refer to the period after Christmas and New Year’s Eve, when there are large crowds of people.
The number of deaths has also risen in recent weeks: nine were recorded on Monday and seven on Tuesday. The average for the week between May 19 and 26 was two deaths a day and the last time there were more than seven deaths was more than four months ago, on January 23.
