
The municipality of Covilhã, in the Castelo Branco district, has expressed deep gratitude towards Daniel Agrelo for his lifelong dedication, highlighting that his tragic death leaves a void, especially among those who had the privilege of working alongside him.
Condolences are also extended to the other casualties of the fires, and best wishes are given for the speedy recovery of the injured firefighters involved in the road accident.
The votes of condolence and commendation were unanimously approved in a public session led by the socialist mayor, Vítor Pereira, who submitted the motions for a vote.
Condolences are likewise extended to the other fire victims.
Daniel Agrelo, a firefighter from Covilhã, died on August 17 in a road accident while en route to a rural fire in the municipality of Fundão.
During the fires in August, Carlos Dâmaso, 43, a former mayor of Vila Franca do Deão in the municipality of Guarda, Adolfo Santos, engaged in fire combat in the municipality of Mirandela, and forest ranger Daniel Esteves, who worked for a private company involved in forest protection, also died as a result of injuries while battling a fire in the municipality of Sabugal.
The executive has also commended those on the front lines and all who supported operations and provided resources and assistance.
The city council highlights “the exemplary efforts of local populations in each parish who fought the flames with heroism and commitment” and acknowledges the work of the Covilhã Volunteer Firefighters, who tirelessly worked in the field despite the irreplaceable loss they suffered.
Commendations were also extended to everyone deployed to the municipality for the forest fire situation.
The Covilhã City Council unanimously approved the exemption of urban planning fees for areas affected by the fires.
This exemption will be in effect for five years and aims to aid in mitigating the losses suffered.
