The Ministry of Infrastructure and Housing reported an 8.5% increase in CP passenger numbers over the first two months of the year compared to the same period in 2024, rising from 29.5 million to 32 million.
During the same period, CP’s revenues also saw a 3.9% increase, growing from 33.9 million euros to 35.2 million euros, according to the government.
The ministry noted that “Portuguese people are increasingly using trains, thanks to the Green Railway Pass (PFV),” with the Regional service witnessing a 121.4% surge in demand, raising the number of passengers from two million to 4.6 million by the end of February.
In the Intercidades service, demand increased by 54.3% during this period, rising from approximately 466,000 passengers to 718,000, with 323,000 of these being reservations made using the PFV.
In the Alfa Pendular service, where the PFV cannot be used, there was a 2.4% rise in passenger numbers, increasing from 273,000 to 280,000.
The 20-euro monthly PFV was introduced on October 21 last year, and since then, according to the ministry, 220,000 passes have been sold, of which 40% represent new customers.
“It can be concluded that the Green Railway Pass has had a strong impact on the demand for Regional and Intercidades trains, without affecting the increase in demand for Alfa Pendular nor the growth of CP’s revenues,” stated the ministry led by Miguel Pinto Luz, expressing satisfaction with these results.
