CP’s profit halves in 2024 (even with more passengers)

The railway company CP – Comboios de Portugal reported a profit of 1.8 million euros for the year 2024, marking its third consecutive year of positive results, though this figure was half of the 2023 profits. The company also saw an 8.7% increase in passengers transported.

According to CP’s 2024 financial report, highlighted by a Portuguese newspaper, this performance follows profits of 9.2 million euros in 2022 and 3.6 million euros in 2023.

Last year, CP transported 188.3 million passengers and gained traffic revenues 13.2% higher than in 2023, totaling 280.1 million euros.

CP successfully reduced its debt from 202.6 million euros to 103.6 million euros in 2024, a decrease that enabled “the achievement of positive financial autonomy ratios and created favorable conditions for necessary investments to ensure the company’s future sustainability.”

Throughout the year, CP’s services “continued to be affected by various modernization works on the railway infrastructure,” causing delays in several commercial services.

“It is expected that upon their completion, new conditions will allow CP to substantially improve its operational performance,” the report noted, stating a decline in punctuality by 6.8 percentage points in 2024 compared to 2023, reaching 67.2%.

Conversely, the regularity indicator improved by 5.4 percentage points to 97.3%.

By the end of 2024, CP employed 3,890 workers, an increase of 155 since the end of 2023, and maintained a fleet of 444 vehicles, including 238 railcars, 50 locomotives, and 156 carriages, marking a reduction of four vehicles over the year.

CP also highlighted the introduction of the Green Railway Pass in October of the previous year, considering it to have “a significant impact on modal shift to rail.”
