A 50-year-old man aboard the cargo ship CHRYSALIS was rescued on Wednesday after showing “signs of a stroke” when the vessel was located 50 nautical miles, or approximately 93 kilometers, northwest of the Figueira da Foz Port.
Following an alert to the Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination Center of Lisbon (MRCC Lisboa), the health condition of the Filipino man was assessed by the Urgent Patient Observation Center (CODUMAR), which determined the need for rescue, stated the Portuguese Navy in a communiqué.
The action was taken in collaboration with the Portuguese Air Force, which activated Squadron 751 – “Pumas,” based at Air Base No. 6 in Montijo.
“Using the EH-101 Merlin helicopter, the rescue proceeded under the usual parameters for this type of operation. This type of mission always requires close coordination between the pilot, winch operator, and rescuer to ensure everything is done safely and as quickly as possible,” the organization noted in a statement.
The man was stabilized by the flight nurse and taken to the Aerodrome of Transit No. 1 in Portela, where a medical team from INEM was waiting to transport him to a hospital in Lisbon.
