Maria Lúcia Amaral stated that the data indicates that both general crime and violent and serious crime are not “increasing substantially,” but “the main cause for concern” is the rise in rape, vehicle theft, and drug trafficking crimes.
“This type of crime, due to its nature and the nature of the violence it entails, has a capacity to generate unease that other crimes do not,” said the minister, who is being heard at the Assembly of the Republic during the parliamentary debate on the Government’s proposal for the State Budget for 2026 (OE2026).
According to the minister, these increases are “significant” and “warrant a response and reflection.”
