A suspect was apprehended by the National Republican Guard (GNR) on Saturday afternoon near his residence in Oliveira do Bairro, Aveiro district, and is scheduled for a hearing on Monday morning, according to a source from the PJ.
The woman’s body, missing since May 18, was discovered last Sunday in the Mortágua area, Viseu district.
Various media outlets report that the suspect is the victim’s ex-boyfriend, who was also missing.
On Monday, the PJ announced in a press release that after extensive and continuous searches, a body was located late Sunday in Mortágua, suspected to be the missing woman, which was later confirmed.
The PJ is continuing the investigation to “identify the victim’s identity and the perpetrator of the homicide.”
Two weeks prior, the GNR in Aveiro confirmed that a man around 50 and a woman around 70 from Oliveira do Bairro were missing.
The alert for the woman’s disappearance was raised on May 19.
“Following this situation and some investigations, it was found that she might be with a gentleman we also couldn’t locate. The case was passed to the jurisdiction of the Judicial Police,” it was clarified.
Due to the disappearance of the 50-year-old man, who lived with his mother, she had to be placed in a private social welfare institution.
The GNR in Aveiro also reported that a fire broke out at the man’s property’s annex in the early hours of May 23.
“There was a fire in a kind of warehouse, an annex to the house, where firewood and some agricultural equipment were stored,” they noted.
According to CNN, after the disappearance, the suspect “called a friend to recount that he abandoned a woman 20 years older, alive, somewhere in a forest, which he could not identify.”
