A comprehensive criminal prevention operation by Lisbon’s Public Security Police (PSP) has resulted in the seizure of significant contrabands, including two replicas of firearms, two large knives, 296 rounds of ammunition across various calibers, 246 doses of hashish, 17 doses of cocaine, and numerous pyrotechnic items, according to the Metropolitan Command of Lisbon.
The PSP reported “excellent results” from the operation, which successfully removed five firearms along with other weapons from circulation, thereby enhancing public safety by preventing their use in criminal activities.
Initiated at 7 a.m., the criminal prevention operation was conducted in cooperation with the Department of Investigation and Penal Action (DIAP) of Lisbon, executing 16 search warrants—15 residential and one non-residential—in the areas of Alta de Lisboa, Ameixoeira, and Bairro Casalinho da Ajuda.
The operation led to the arrest of five men aged between 20 and 40, as stated by the police. Of these, three are scheduled to appear in the Lisbon court on Thursday, while two face an initial judicial interrogation to determine their legal constraints.
This police action was prompted by numerous reports of gunfire in these neighborhoods, which heightened the residents’ sense of insecurity, explained the PSP.
The PSP emphasized the necessity of this disruptive action to restore public order and tranquility in the affected areas.
During a preliminary assessment, PSP Commissioner Tiago Costa confirmed the arrest of the five suspects, some known for prior criminal activities. The operation mobilized around 100 officers specializing in criminal investigation, public order duties, and the Special Police Unit.
The PSP affirmed its commitment to maintaining vigilance over such criminal activities, suggesting the likelihood of additional operations within the year.
The operation was executed with the participation of approximately 100 officers from the criminal investigation units, public order teams, and the Special Police Unit.
