Singer Cristina Branco has scheduled a series of concerts in Portugal this year, with her 2007 album “Abril”, to also celebrate the 50th anniversary of April 25, 1974, it was announced today.
According to the artist’s promoter, this national tour starts on April 25 in Póvoa de Varzim, followed by Vila Real (April 26) and Covilhã (April 27). On May 24, she will be in Grândola.
These four dates are joined by a concert on December 5 in Lisbon.
In “Abril”, Cristina Branco reinterprets various compositions from José Afonso’s repertoire and the album was released in 2007, precisely the year that marked two decades since the Portuguese singer’s death.
Arranged and directed by Ricardo Dias, the line-up includes, among others, “Maio Maduro Maio”, “Venham Mais Cinco”, “Era um Redondo Vocábulo” and “Coro da Primavera”.
In a press release, the promoter explains that Cristina Branco will perform the 16 songs from the album “Abril”, accompanied on stage by Ricardo Dias (piano), Bernardo Moreira (double bass), André Sousa Machado and Alexandre Frazão (drums) and Mário Delgado (guitar).
“I sing Zeca Afonso because of the ideal he represents of humanity, simplicity and the quality of his work. […] Any musician has to go through Zeca Afonso and reflect on what he left us,” Cristina Branco told Lusa when she released the album in 2007.
Cristina Branco, who has published more than a dozen albums, including live and studio recordings, celebrated 25 years of her career in 2022.
