The Cristo-Rei Sanctuary in Almada, Setúbal district, will be illuminated in red until Saturday night in tribute to the Portuguese firefighters battling rural fires, the institution announced.
“It is our way of honoring the tireless courage of these heroes who fight the flames across the country,” reads a message posted by the sanctuary on Facebook.
On Facebook, Almada’s Mayor Inês de Medeiros stated that the initiative originated from the municipality following a citizen’s proposal.
The mayor also noted that to amplify the solidarity message, the Town Hall is similarly illuminated in red.
